Biography
Michael and Barbara earned undergraduate degrees (1963) in Anthropology at the University of Arizona and began graduate school in at the London School of Economics and the University of London, where they became interested in primate behavior.  In 1963-1964 they studied the social behavior of Barbary macques in Gibraltar.  More graduate study followed at UC-Berkeley, from where they graduated in 1968 with degrees (Ph.D. and M.A., respectively) in Physical Anthropology, but with a continuing and still developing interest in ethology (animal behavior) they soon were studying the social behavior of Acorn Woodpeckers in central California.  In post-doctoral study in ethology with Niko Tinbergen at Oxford during the early 1970s, they studied gulls and flocking and feeding in Great Tits.  They returned to California in mid 1970s for further study of the ecology and behavior of Acorn Woodpeckers, under the auspices of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology.

After a move to Shreveport, Louisiana, they became interested in the philosophy of science and citation analysis, but since the mid 1980s, after stumbling upon a pitcher plant bog in the Kisatchie National Forest in central Louisiana, it has been all botany -- notably community descriptions, rare species inventories, floristic surveys, and phytogeography.  Currently they curate the herbarium at Louisiana State University in Shreveport and are associated with the Museum of Life Sciences, Red River Watershed Management Institute, and Biology Department at Louisiana State University in Shreveport.  They are sole proprietors of Bog Research and have had contracts with TNC, Natural Heritage Programs, National Park Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and National Forests in Texas and Louisiana.  They are working on the floristics of Morse Clay Prairies, Saline Prairies, and the Big Thicket National Preserve and various aspects of West Gulf Coastal Plain phytogeography.  They currently are conducting an inventory of Geocarpon minimum in Louisiana.
