Supermarket Botany

(Grades Pre K-6)

Use sorting activities to distinguish the parts of the plants we eat and the differences in fruits and vegetables.  Discover the history of supermarkets and how the foods in them have changed the course of history through civilization.  Many history and geography connections are included.

Pumpkins...More than Just a Jack-O-Lantern*

Meet the pumpkin family and learn about plant family relationships.  Explore the importance of family members to cultures around the world.  Introduce children to pumpkin games and exploratory activities to reinforce reading, math, social studies, and science skills.

(Grades 1-5)

Discover basic leaf structure, function and identification through information and engaging activities.  Explore cultural connections with leaves and practice identifying a number of important plants, such as poison ivy!  Lessons have a strong math emphasis.

Introduce your students to the important interactions between plants and pollinators.  Be experts on butterflies, hummingbirds, bees and bats and discover how they are specially adapted to pollinate certain flowers.  Delve into physical science, studying the visible spectrum, and make bee and butterfly glasses to learn that these animals see differently than we do.

Absorb the history of Texas through a different perspective - the plants that grew on the prairies. Students will learn about prairie grasses, explore the uses of native plants by pioneers and early inhabitants, and meet pioneer botanists who had a significant impact on our state.
