Ecosystem & Ecology Trunks

These trunks include activities and tools for students to explore ecosystems through classroom and field studies.  Trunks must be reserved in advance and are loaned for two weeks.

Prairie Ecosystem Trunk

Includes flagging, soil corers, a soil horizon guide, insect collecting and viewing containers, wildflower and insect guides, measuring tape and curriculum manual.

Rivers & Watersheds Ecosystem Trunk

Includes related games, insect identification mat, collection bucket and jars, magnifying lenses, forceps, sampling nets, plexiglass viewer, petri dishes, identification book, and curriculum manual.

Forest Ecosystem Trunk

Includes Texas Forests Forever (CD for computer), manuals, tree sections, posters, measuring tape and dbh tape, soil or air thermometer, compass, tree height gauge, flagging for marking trees and more.

Insect Ecology Trunk

Contains vials for preserving specimens, Riker mounts, spreading boards, nets, aspirators, mounting pins and magnifier-top collection boxes.  Permanently mounted insects from different orders also included.

Gulf Coast Ecosystem Trunk

Contains marine microscope slides and preserved specimens, shell sets, ocean mineral study set, posters, books and a set of videos.

Desert Ecosystem Trunk

Contains casts of desert animal tracks, tape of nocturnal animal sounds, magnifying glass, soil corer, field guide for desert plants, astronomy tape and planisphere, collecting jars, desert survival game, and curriculum manual.

Rainforest Trunk

Contains a CD of the sounds of the forest and music of forest people, set of 30 slides exploring plants, animals and the ecology of the forest, and stories from a scientist about the challenges of tropical biologist.

Urban Ecology Trunk

Includes set of 15 student binoculars (additional sets can be requested), Birds of Eastern and Western United States poster, Project Pigeon Watch instruction and overview video, The Lorax and other urban wildlife-related books, bird egg identification magnets, Urban Ecology curriculum, scat replicas and more.
