Bring your brown bag to BRIT and enjoy informal lunch gatherings with BRIT staff, volunteers and like-minded members of the business and conservation communities. These free informative sessions are held  in the BRIT Learning Center. Registration is not necessary and parking is free!

Valentines to the Plant Kingdom

Valentine’s Day is traditionally a day for celebration of romantic affection.  BRIT staff and friends will share expressions of love for plants, places, botanists and conservationists  through music, prose, poetry and art.   Come enjoy this fun informal gathering on a cold winter’s day.

Summer Orchids of Texas
Dr. Marcy Brown Marsden, University of Dallas


Dr. Marsden will share her research on the distribution and health of populations of the genus Hexalectris in north central Texas.  This unusual orchid manages to withstand the heat of a Texas summer blooming under stands of juniper and oak. She will also discuss the unusual biochemistry involved in the nonphotosynthetic lifestyle of this rare genus.

Gardening with Woody Lilies: Agaves, Yuccas and More
Peter Schaar, Ph.D., Horticultural Consulting and Garden Design

Dr. Schaar will explain how to design with and grow woody lilies to achieve visual contrast and drama in a garden which is heat and drought tolerant.  Photographs from several gardens will help train the eye as he discusses growing techniques for many native and adapted plants. As a designer and horticultural consultant, Dr. Schaar specializes in drought tolerant landscapes.  This program can help you achieve visually striking plantings with low maintenance requirements in your own garden.
