Twenty-four species of Aster and one species of Brachyactis occur in Oklahoma. Jones’ study of Oklahoma asters was initiated in 1985 when she was invited to contribute the treatment of the genus to the planned Flora of Oklahoma.
An analytical key is provided for both Aster and Brachyactis. Descriptions of each taxon are presented in alphabetical order by scientific name; each scientific name is followed by colloquial names. For each species, Jones provides chromosome number, synonyms, phenology, ecology, and general geographical distribution along with a county dot map for each species.
