Research Botanist and Head of the Andes to Amazon Biodiversity Program based at BRIT and in Peru, John earned his Ph.D. in botany from Texas A&M University in 2000. He worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow during 2000-2003 with Scott Mori in the Institute of Systematic Botany and Michael Balick in the Institute of Economic Botany at The New York Botanical Garden. In 2003 he joined the BRIT staff where he started the Andes to Amazon Biodiversity Program. He is also an Adjunct Faculty of the Texas Christian University College of Science and Engineering where he serves as graduate advisor to four M.S. students conducting botanical research at BRIT and in Peru.
John is interested in the diversity, ecology, evolution, biogeography, and conservation of tropical forests, particularly in the American tropics. Driven by this interest, his research is dedicated to two levels of botanical diversity. He conducts research at two scales of tropical plant diversity involving the Myristicaceae (nutmeg) family of trees and the flora of the Andes-Amazon region of southeastern Peru. He is a very active field botanist and since 1995 he has led or co-led 22 botanical expeditions to tropical America, with 11 expeditions to Peru. In 2005 he will extend his exploration of tropical plant diversity to tropical Asia through an expedition to Papua New Guinea.
