Dr. Touwaide's life has been guided by his research, from Belgium to Italy, to Spain, to the USA. Being a classicist, he has taught and done research in faculties of medicine, pharmacy, and sciences across the globe to get acquainted with the disciplines that he brought together in his research. In the field of history of botany, medical botany, medicine, and pharmacy, Dr. Touwaide explores the written record of practice in the Old World (Mediterranean cultures, Greek, Latin and Arabic, from ca. 800 BC to AD 1650). He publishes and studies unknown texts and adds the information they provide to a constantly increasing database on the therapeutic uses of natural products, particularly plants.

For these studies to be possible, together with Emanuela Appetiti, he has built a transdisiciplinary research and education organization: the Institute for the Preservation of Medical Traditions (IPMT). The IPMT also curates the library collection that the two have built, which totals now ca. 15,000 items and is open to the scholarly and scientific community from all over.
